From time to time, software vendors or open source software projects release new versions of their programs, either to provide security enhancements or new features. A website hosting account typically uses a number of different software programs (eg. the server operating system, the control panel, the e-mail server software, ftp server, etc.).

When a new version of server software is released, there are sometimes problems with compatibility - one piece of software having changed, can cause another peice of software to malfunction. However, there is also a security risk in using out-of-date software, so we have to try to strike a blance between security and usability.

Therefore when a critical update (ie. one that seriously affects website security) is made to server software, we will apply the update automatically. This applies to server-wide software only (eg. PHP, MySQL, cPanel).

On an individual hosting account basis, we do NOT perform any upgrades automatically. This is because we have a large number of hosting accounts, each of which would need to be updated individually, and also many of our clients have customised versions of software packages which would break if we tried to upgrade them without knowing what changes had been made.

Therefore, when a new version of Joomla, or any other software that is specific to your hosting account or has been installed by you is released, it will be your responsibility to upgrade your own software. If you run into difficulties or need guidance, we will help you out. If you would like us to perform an upgrade on your behalf, we may be able to do this for a fixed fee.
